The Relationships among Acceptance, Psychological Symptoms,Self-esteem, and Satisfaction with Life

Abstract

|
The present study investigated the relationships among psychological acceptance measured by AAQ (Acceptance and Action Questionnaire), cognitive and emotional regulations, anxiety and depression, persecutory ideation, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. The AAQ, the MAAS(Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the White Bear Suppression Inventory, the Thought Control Questionnaire, the Dichotomous Thinking Index, the STAI, the CES-D, the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, the Persecutory Ideation Questionnaire, the Self-esteem Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale were administered to 349 college students. The AAQ acceptance score was positively correlated with MAAS and positive reappraisal, and negatively correlated with self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing, thought suppression, self-punishment, worry, and dichotomous thinking. The acceptance score of AAQ showed significant explanatory power on depression, anxiety, persecutory idea, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. According to the results of regression analyses and ANOVA, both of the psychological acceptance and mindfulness attention awareness could contribute to the psychological health, but the persons who have higher levels of acceptance and attention awareness showed the lowest levels of depressive and persecutory symptoms and the highest level of self-esteem, and showed the lowest levels of dysfunctional regualtion and negative thoughts, such as distraction, self-blame, worry, and dichotomous thinking. The psychological characteristics of psychological acceptance measured by AAQ and its usefulness for positive therapy were discussed.
